Canada Introduces Visa-Free Travel for Eligible Citizens of Indonesia and Malaysia

Canada has announced a significant travel policy update that will make it easier for eligible citizens of Indonesia and Malaysia to visit the country. Effective May 26, 2026, qualifying travelers from these two Southeast Asian nations can apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) instead of a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) when traveling to Canada by air.

This change is expected to simplify the travel process, reduce costs, and encourage stronger people-to-people connections between Canada, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

Who Qualifies for an eTA?

Citizens of Indonesia and Malaysia may be eligible for an eTA if they are traveling to Canada by air and meet one of the following conditions:

  • They have held a Canadian Temporary Resident Visa within the last 10 years; or
  • They currently possess a valid U.S. non-immigrant visa.

These travelers are considered “known travelers” because they have previously undergone immigration screening by Canadian or U.S. authorities.

Benefits of the New Policy

The eTA application process is significantly faster and more affordable than applying for a visitor visa. Applicants only need a valid passport, an email address, and a credit or debit card. The application fee is just CAD $7, and many applications are approved within minutes.

The eTA remains valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, allowing multiple visits to Canada during that period.

Important Limitations

The new visa exemption only applies to air travel. Travelers entering Canada by land or sea will still need a visitor visa. In addition, those planning to work or study in Canada must continue applying for the appropriate work or study permits.

Strengthening Canada’s Indo-Pacific Ties

The policy aligns with Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, which aims to strengthen economic, educational, and cultural partnerships across the region. Indonesia and Malaysia are important partners for Canada, and easier access to travel is expected to support tourism, business collaboration, and international education opportunities.

Final Thoughts

Canada’s decision to expand eTA eligibility to qualified Indonesian and Malaysian citizens marks another step toward improving global mobility and strengthening international relationships. For eligible travelers, visiting Canada is now faster, simpler, and more accessible than ever before.
