You Need to Know About the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)

Part 1: Everything You Need to Know About the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) 📊

If you’re planning to immigrate to Canada through the Express Entry system, understanding the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is essential to your success. The CRS is a points-based system used by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to rank candidates for Canadian Permanent Residency (PR) under the Express Entry programs.

In 2023, Canada issued 110,266 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for Permanent Residency through Express Entry, and it plans to issue another 110,000 ITAs in 2024. So, how do you stand out and improve your chances of getting an ITA? The answer is simple: the CRS score.

What is the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)?

The CRS is a points-based system that ranks candidates based on their age, skills, education, language proficiency, work experience, and other factors that determine how well they will adapt to life and work in Canada. Your CRS score plays a huge role in determining whether you will receive an ITA for PR.

To be eligible for Express Entry, you must first qualify for at least one of these programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

The CRS awards points based on a variety of factors that reflect your ability to succeed in Canada. The higher your score, the better your chances of getting an ITA in the next Express Entry draw.

How Does the CRS Work?

The CRS assesses a wide range of factors:

  • Skills (including education and language skills)
  • Work experience (both Canadian and foreign)
  • Language ability (English and/or French)
  • Age
  • Family ties to Canada
  • Arranged employment
  • Provincial nominations

Your total CRS score can be as high as 1,200 points, and the candidates with the highest scores are the first to be invited to apply for PR during the Express Entry draws.

How Does Canada Use CRS Scores?

Each Express Entry draw has a cut-off CRS score, which determines the minimum points required to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA). The higher your CRS score, the higher your chances of receiving an ITA. If two candidates have the same score, the date and time of their application are used as a tiebreaker.

What CRS Score Do You Need to Get an ITA?

The CRS cut-off score can vary for each draw. In 2023, for example:

  • General draws had the lowest CRS cut-off of 481 (on March 29, 2023).
  • Category-based draws, like those for candidates in agriculture and agri-food occupations, had a cut-off as low as 354.
